When we talk about the golden hour after birth, one of the most beautiful and important practices encouraged is skin-to-skin contact. But here’s the thing, it doesn’t have to stop there. Skin-to-skin isn’t just a sweet bonding moment for right after birth. It’s an evidence-based practice that continues to offer incredible benefits for both mum and baby in the hours, days, weeks, and even months after birth.

The First Touch
Once your baby is born, they’ll ideally be placed straight onto your chest or stomach, bare skin to bare skin. This moment is more than emotional; it’s physiological. It helps your baby transition from the safety of the womb into the outside world.
In those first moments and hours, skin-to-skin contact helps initiate breastfeeding. Your baby, guided by instinct, will begin to explore your chest. With their senses heightened, particularly smell and touch, they’re often able to locate the breast and begin to latch on naturally.
And for mums, this magical moment triggers a rush of breastfeeding hormones and sending the body the message of readiness to nourish her baby.
Even if you choose not to breastfeed, skin-to-skin still plays a huge role in attachment and emotional bonding.
The Science of Connection
Skin-to-skin is more than just a bonding tool, it’s a biological regulation system.
Spending time chest-to-chest with your baby helps regulate:
Heart rate
Breathing
Blood pressure
Blood glucose levels
Body temperature
Babies don’t yet have the ability to sweat or shiver effectively. That’s where you come in. Studies show that a mother’s body can adjust to warm or cool her baby, making her more effective than artificial warmers!
Skin-to-skin also activates your baby’s immune system. Exposure to your skin’s natural bacteria helps your baby begin building their own healthy gut flora and immunity helping them identify the good from the bad. This is equally important for dads to do skin-to-skin contact with their baby.

Calmer Babies, More Confident Parents
Research tells us that babies who spend more time skin-to-skin cry less, are calmer, and have lower stress levels. It’s not surprising, then, that this simple practice strengthens your ability to tune into your baby’s cues and needs.
It’s like a reset button for both of you.
And if skin-to-skin couldn’t happen right away after birth, that’s okay. You can start anytime. Whether it’s later that day, the next day, or the week after it’s never too late to begin. Skin-to-skin remains beneficial well beyond the early newborn period.
Make It Part of Your Everyday
Here’s a tip: Try to build a bit of skin-to-skin into your daily rhythm. Some easy ways to incorporate it:
During contact naps
While feeding (breast or bottle)
After a bath
While cuddling and playing
These moments aren’t just for comfort. They’re for growth, healing, bonding, and thriving.
